Whispers Across the Veil: Tending Our Living Bond with the Ancestors
Beyond the folklore of Samhain lies a deep invitation to trust the darkness and live more fully.
As the last of the leaves fall and the nights grow long, we arrive at Samhain, the ancient Celtic fire festival marking the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter.
Samhain, pronounced Sow-in, is the Celtic New Year: a sacred seasonal portal of death and rebirth. Although we usually celebrate this on October 31 and November 1, Samhain is actually at the precise astronomical midpoint between the Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice. This year, it falls on November 6th.
From an animist perspective, Samhain is not simply about folklore or the past. It’s a living conversation between the seen and unseen worlds. It’s a time when we remember that everything around us is alive and in relationship with us. The land, the ancestors, the trees, and even the breath we take are part of one great web of being.
As a spiritual healer walking the animist path, I see Samhain as a profound reminder that we are never separate from the cycles of life, death, and renewal. We are always in communion with the greater rhythm of Spirit.
At this threshold, the Earth herself offers us the wisdom of surrender. The word surrender comes from the early 15th-century Old French verb surrendre, meaning to give up or return. At this time of year, we watch trees release their leaves, the ground closing to rest, and we are invited to do the same; to let go, lay things to rest, and surrender into the quiet richness of the darkness as we await the return of light at Winter Solstice.
This is the time to rest, regroup, and really examine what truly matters most in your life. In the quiet darkness of the season, lays the womb within the tomb, a place of stillness, followed by gestation of something truer waiting to be born.
Samhain reminds us that life is a spiral, a cycle of cycles in many directions. Just like the connection of the out-breath and the in-breath, there is an invisible thread that connects death and life.
This thread is woven through the presence of our Ancestors, who have actually walked through the portal of death and changed form. They have a lot of wisdom to teach us, not only about letting go and surrender, but also about life and living. They remind us how precious life is, teaching us how to live more fully and how to love really well.
They say at Samhain, the veil between the worlds grows thin, the veil between us and our ancestors, between us and the spirits. But I wonder about this veil, and whether it might be an illusion. What if it’s a wall we’ve built ourselves, a wall that grows thicker when we stop honouring or connecting with our Ancestors? Like any relationship, when we neglect it, it fades. But when we create intimacy, the bond flourishes, and the whispers of those who came before us grow strong again. This is the invitation of Samhain: to tend the living bond with those who have crossed over and listen to their wisdom.
Samhain Reflections
Grab your journal.
If your time left was short, what would suddenly become clear about what truly matters? How would you live, love, or create differently today?
What parts of you are waiting to be reborn through surrender?
What would it mean to trust the darkness as a place of gestation, not loss?
Honour Your Ancestors
A simple ritual.
To honour this threshold, here is a simple ritual using apples. In Celtic tradition, apples were sacred gifts to the dead — symbols of immortality and the soul’s return.
Light a candle.
Speak the names of your Ancestors aloud.
Place an apple slice outside or in the earth as an offering of love, remembrance, and gratitude for all your Ancestors lived so that you could experience life.
May this Samhain remind you that death is not the opposite of life but its sacred partner.
And if you’re moving through a season of letting go, I offer gentle support through life’s sacred thresholds. You can read more about that here ⇢
